Where you sleep shapes the trip. Downtown puts you walking distance from dinner and about five minutes from a trailhead. Out along Highway 128 you get red rock walls and dark skies. Toward the parks there are resorts, campgrounds, and RV sites with views most hotels would charge for. Hotels, condos, guest houses, B&Bs, and every kind of camping, from a national park site to a full hookup. Spring and fall fill early, so book those ahead.
