Moab, UT — When most people think of Moab, they picture world-class adventure — climbing, mountain biking, off-roading, hiking, even backcountry skiing. Visitors near and far are drawn to the beauty and adventure of Moab’s red rock canyon country. But sometimes, adventure doesn’t go as planned.
That’s where the Grand County Search and Rescue team comes in. As one of the busiest rescue teams in Utah, GCSAR responds to an average of 130 calls a year. A new locally produced podcast, Back From Beyond, shares these true stories of search and rescue — highlighting the incredible skill, teamwork, and commitment of local responders while offering first-person lessons in preparedness.
“You might not think you need that extra bit of water, a first aid kit, or a headlamp,” said producer and host Molly Marcello. “But time and again, I’ve heard how one simple decision — tossing an extra layer in the pack, bringing a satellite phone, telling someone where you’re going — has saved a life. This series is about celebrating Moab’s amazing recreation, while showing how a little preparedness can make all the difference.”
Developed by Grand County Search and Rescue, KZMU Moab Community Radio, Grand County Active Transportation and Trails, and the Moab Office of Tourism, the series features seven dramatic episodes, including climbers stranded on Castleton Tower, backcountry skiers stuck in the La Sals, a BASE jumper injured in precarious terrain, and an off-roader’s rollover at Hurrah Pass. Each story highlights the teamwork and skill of Moab’s rescue community—from Grand County EMS to Classic Air Medical and more—while reminding listeners that outdoor mishaps can happen to anyone.
“These are not people doing intentionally dangerous things,” Marcello added. “They’re regular folks who had a bad day outdoors. Their willingness to share their stories — along with the voices of first responders — gives us all a chance to learn and be better prepared.”
Scott Solle, Vice Commander of Grand County Search and Rescue, said he hopes the series inspires listeners to prepare before heading into the backcountry: “These are adventure stories, but they also highlight how simple decisions can prevent serious situations. Even bringing a flashlight, a rope ascender, or keeping your phone charged can make a difference. If this series helps prevent even one rescue, it would save our county thousands of dollars and countless volunteer hours. At the same time, it showcases the incredible recreation opportunities we have here — and I’m proud of the work our team does to keep people safe.”
Episodes of Back From Beyond are rolling out weekly through October, available now wherever you listen to podcasts. Stay tuned for them on KZMU Moab Community Radio, and community stations across the region.
Marcello added: “We can all help our amazing first responders by sharing this podcast — and by taking just a moment before our next adventure to prepare for the unexpected.”
