Moab Area Travel Council
The Moab Area Travel Council seeks to improve the local
economy by promoting and supporting recreation, tourism and conventions
in a manner that promotes and protects the beauty and scenery of our natural
environment.
Moab is located within Grand County which
contains some of the world's most spectacular scenery. Within its boundaries
lie Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, Dead Horse Point State Park,
Manti-La Sal National Forest, the Colorado River, and an abundance of Bureau
of Land Management Recreation Areas. This region is an outdoor wonderland
for hikers, bikers, sightseers, photography buffs, rafters, golfers, four
wheelers, hunters, fishers, heritage culture seekers, and much more.
Moab, the county seat, is the only town in Utah located on
the Colorado River. The rugged and beautiful desert landscape surrounding
town invites exploration by automobile, mountain bike, 4-wheel drive vehicle,
raft, kayak, canoe or on foot. The La Sal Mountains, just 18 miles to
the southeast, provide a spectacular backdrop for most activities in the
Moab area. Refreshing mountain meadows, lakes and streams abound in picturesque
pine, spruce, fir, and aspen forests. The lush mountain valleys and alpine
beauty provide striking contrast to the panoramic view of the deserts and
canyons below.
With its combination of varied types of terrain and spectacular scenery,
Moab has become known as a Mountain Biking Mecca for enthusiasts from all
over the world. Mountain bikers of all skill levels will find trails to
their liking in the Moab area. Moab is also the home of the world-famous
Slickrock Bike Trail and several major annual bicycle events, including
the Canyonlands Fat Tire Festival and the 24 Hours of Moab endurance team
race.
Grand County is also blessed with an abundance of river recreation opportunities.
Visitors may select river adventures ranging from heart pounding whitewater
adventure in Cataract and Westwater Canyons, family-oriented moderate
whitewater trips on the Colorado River north of Moab, to tranquil calm
water float trips down the Green River.
The varied topography found in Grand County offers excellent, and practically
unlimited, recreational opportunities throughout the year.
