MIC Lecture Series: Randall Irmis – Moab Before the Dinosaurs: Life on a Coastal Desert 300 Million Years Ago

July 11 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Some 70 million years before the first dinosaurs evolved, Moab was situated just north of the equator ~ a desert on the coast of a shallow ocean. Despite these hot and dry conditions, the Moab area was teaming with life ~300 million years ago, including some of the earliest mammal ancestors. Dr. Irmis will discuss ongoing collaborative fieldwork and research that is uncovering what kinds of animals and plants lived during this time, and what they tell us about the last time the Earth transitioned from an icehouse to greenhouse state.
