MIC Lecture Series: Jody Patterson – How Not to Do Aerial Archaeology in Southeastern Utah Archaeology

May 23 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Aerial archaeology is almost as old as human flight itself. While it is a very viable archaeological method in Europe and the Middle East, it is under-utilized in the United States despite the amenability to vast portions of the Desert West. Early forays by Charles Lindbergh and others into aerial archaeology in the American SW proved popular with the public, but the methods and procedures, with a few important exceptions, never caught on with the archaeologists in the region. In this presentation, we’ll examine the history and application of aerial archaeology in the SW and explore recent my misadventures in learning the ropes of aerial archaeology and attempting to apply it in southeastern Utah.
